About Calvary
Calvary has been a community of neighbors centered around San Lorenzo for nearly 75 years. More than a place to “go to church,” we are a community of people constantly figuring out what it means to be church—to one another, and to our neighborhood.
Calvary is a member of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Within this church body, we are part of the CA-NV-HI District.
Hopes
Living as a Christian in the East Bay makes you a minority. We want to see families learning to thrive in faith even in this challenging setting.
Heartbreaks
We’ve suffered losses and disappointments. It’s not pleasant to go through those seasons, but our guess is that you’ve known heartbreak, too. We understand, so we can be here for you.
Challenges
Our neighbors are younger and more diverse than we are. We’re committed to caring for them, and sharing the love of Jesus.
Dreams
Our faith is centered on resurrection and new life. We have expectations of new life for ourselves as individuals and as community. You can expect the same. We want to share this new life with you.
Plan Your Visit
Visit us this Sunday at 9 am. Coffee and snacks follow worship.
We’re following county health guidelines for public spaces. Masks are required indoors.

what to expect
What time do I arrive?
The service starts at 9:00 am. Come early enough to feel comfortable finding a place you’d like to sit. If you’re running late, don’t let that keep you away. The doors will bring you into the back of the room. From there, you can readily find a place.
Where do I park?
We have a small lot on Via Magdalena. If that is full, look for the driveway alongside the sanctuary (the big building with a cross on top), which will take you to a much larger lot behind the church.
What do I wear?
You’ll find people in t-shirts and jeans, and others in suits and ties or dresses. Feel free to wear what you find comfortable, but do wear something.
What is worship like?
We sing as a community, led by organ, guitar, piano, or video recordings, depending on the songs and the Sunday you visit. There are scripted parts of worship where the pastor will speak, and other parts where the congregation speaks together. These are centered on God’s Word, so we speak God’s Word to one another. There’s a sermon, prayers, and time for prayer requests. We celebrate the Lord’s Supper on the first and third Sundays of each month.
Any tips for families with young kids?
The service will last about 75 minutes. If you have young kids, feel free to bring books or other quiet items for them. A changing table is available, if needed.
What do you have for kids?
Prior to the sermon, kids in fifth grade and younger are invited to children’s church where they explore a Bible teaching through storytelling, games, crafts, or other interactive means. Parents are asked to pick up their children from the children’s church area at the close of worship. (Children’s church is temporarily suspended as we monitor the impact of COVID on schools and developments concerning vaccines for children. We will reassess children’s church by Summer 2022.)
